If you have some furniture dollies that you would like to use to move your furniture around your home or to move it to a new property but the castor wheels on these dollies are in poor condition and have to be replaced, here are some useful tips that should make it easier to pick the right ones.

Pick castors that come with a brake mechanism

Any wheels that will be attached to a furniture dolly must have a brake mechanism. It is particularly important to choose castor wheels with this feature if you will be using your furniture dollies when moving house. The reason for this is that if a dolly without brakes has, for example, a desk on top of it, and it is placed on any slippery floor surface or on any type of sloped ground, the dolly could easily slide away from where it was first placed.

If it slides toward a hard object or wall surface, it could hit it hard enough to cause the furniture on top of it to sustain damage. If it slides down a slope and picks up speed as it does this, the furniture could tumble off of it and end up broken, or worse still, the dolly could crash into someone at the lower end of this slope and injure them. The damage caused by these incidents could be costly to rectify and could disrupt the process of moving house.

You can avoid all of the potential pitfalls that come with using furniture dollies by making sure that the castors you attach to them have brake mechanisms that, when engaged, will prevent these wheels from turning and the dollies from sliding around.

Look for castors that won't leave marks on the surfaces it travels on

When a set of castors are connected to pallets, trolleys or dollies that are used outdoors or in industrial settings, it doesn't really matter if they are made from materials that might leave marks on the ground over which they roll. However, if your furniture dollies are used indoors in your home, then it is best to ensure that you pick ones that will not stain the carpets, floorboards or tiles that you roll them over.

Rubber or steel castors might be suitable in this situation, as neither of these materials will blemish the surfaces that they come into contact with. If you are concerned about your furniture dolly's wheels leaving behind marks, it is also important to ensure that after using it outdoors for any length of time, you wash the wheels with a damp cloth before rolling the dolly into your home, as otherwise, any soil or other dirt on the wheels may be transferred to your floors.
